For a warming spicy meal lentils are cheap and nourishing,

one cup lentils
water to cover
pinch salt or to taste
one sliced and fried onion
3 gloves chopped garlic
half teasp. turmeric
about a quarter of inch of peeled fresh ginger leave whole its easy to remove then.
one green chillie , I wouldn't recommend using one of those thin ones unless your palette is very tough LOL

Put water to boil and add salt
when ready add the lentils
and cook down until thick, watch the water doesn't boil dry
when ready, add
onion
garlic
ginger
tumeric
chillie whole but slit.
stir well and keep warm on a low heat.

Warm some pita bread or chappatis
remove the ginger
then just serve it's delicious.
